KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Small chips outside the driver's line of sight are often repairable if handled quickly.
- A windshield is a laminated safety part bonded to the body with urethane.
- Most newer cars need forward-camera calibration after windshield replacement.
- AAA found ADAS work was 25.4% of its sample windshield replacement cost.
- Debris damage is usually covered under comprehensive, and you can choose your shop.
A windshield replacement in Fremont usually takes a few hours, is often covered under the comprehensive part of your auto policy, and on most newer cars has to be followed by a camera calibration so lane-keep and emergency braking work correctly. Small chips can often be repaired instead of replaced if you deal with them quickly.
Glass is part of what we do at Fremont Elite Autoworks. Our sister auto glass company has two certified glass technicians and works with a wholesale glass supplier, so glass work happens alongside the body repair instead of as a separate appointment somewhere else.
Why windshields break around Fremont
The most common cause we see is road debris. Fremont's roads carry heavy truck traffic: I-880 is a major freight corridor, and the industrial and warehouse areas around Albrae Street, Stevenson Boulevard and Warm Springs see trucks all day. A small stone off a tire at freeway speed is enough to chip laminated glass.
Heat plays a part too. On a dry, sunny summer afternoon, a small chip can grow into a long crack when you blast the A/C on a hot windshield, or when the glass cools quickly in the evening. The smaller the chip when you deal with it, the more likely it can be repaired instead of replaced.
Repair or replace?
As a general guide:
| Situation | Usually |
|---|---|
| Chip smaller than a quarter, not in the driver's line of sight | Repairable |
| Crack shorter than a few inches, away from the edge | Sometimes repairable |
| Damage in the driver's direct line of sight | Replace |
| Crack that reaches the edge of the glass | Replace |
| Damage in front of the camera or rain sensor area | Replace |
| Glass broken in a collision | Replace |
A repair injects resin into the chip to stop it spreading and restore clarity. It won't make the chip completely invisible, but it keeps the original factory seal.
What a windshield actually does

A windshield isn't just a window. It's laminated: two layers of glass with a plastic interlayer that holds the pieces together when it breaks. It's bonded to the body with urethane adhesive, and it helps the roof hold its shape and gives the passenger airbag something to push against. That's why the adhesive and its cure time matter, and why you shouldn't drive away before the installer says it's safe.
OEM versus aftermarket glass
- OEM glass is made to the carmaker's spec, often by the same supplier.
- OEE or aftermarket glass is made to fit by another manufacturer. Quality varies.
On cars with cameras, heads-up displays, acoustic glass or heated wiper areas, glass details matter. The camera looks through a specific zone of the glass, and small optical differences can make calibration harder. We'll tell you what your car needs and what your policy covers.
Rain sensors, heads-up displays and special glass
Many newer windshields do more than keep the wind out. Before ordering glass, we check for:
- Rain and light sensors mounted behind the mirror, which need a clean gel pad and correct seating.
- Heads-up display (HUD) glass, which has a special wedge-shaped interlayer so the projected image doesn't double.
- Acoustic glass that reduces road noise, common on European models.
- Heated wiper parks or heated glass used on some cold-weather packages.
- Tinted shade bands and solar coatings that differ between trim levels.
Ordering by year and model alone isn't enough. The glass has to match your car's exact options, or features stop working.
Camera calibration after windshield replacement
On most newer cars, the forward camera for lane keeping and automatic braking is mounted to the windshield. When the glass is replaced, the camera's aim changes, even if only slightly, and the manufacturer usually requires calibration.
AAA's 2023 study of ADAS repair costs found that ADAS work made up about a quarter of the cost of its sample windshield replacement: $360 of $1,439.78, or 25.4%. The Auto Glass Safety Council also explains why calibration needs to follow the manufacturer's procedure. Since we do calibrations in house, the glass and the calibration happen in one visit. How insurance handles windshield claims
Glass damage from road debris is usually covered under comprehensive coverage, not collision. A few things to check:
- Your deductible. A chip repair may cost less than your deductible, so paying out of pocket can make sense.
- Glass coverage options. Some policies have separate or reduced glass deductibles.
- Calibration. When calibration is required after a covered replacement, it's normally part of the claim.
- Your choice of shop. Glass claims sometimes go through a network the insurer uses. California lets you choose your repair shop. See Can I choose my own body shop in California?
If the glass broke in a collision, it's part of the collision claim along with the body damage. For the full process, see our complete guide to a car accident in Fremont.
After the new windshield goes in
- Wait before driving for the time the installer gives you, so the urethane can set.
- Leave the retention tape on for the first day if the installer applied it.
- Skip the car wash for a couple of days.
- Don't slam the doors the first day. Pressure changes can disturb fresh adhesive.
- Check your driver-assistance features. If a warning light comes on, call us.
When glass damage comes with a tow
If glass broke in a crash and the car isn't drivable, have it towed straight to the shop that will do the body work and the glass, so it only makes one trip. Our towing after an accident guide explains how.
Getting your windshield replaced in Fremont
- Repair chips early. Heat and freeway vibration make them spread.

Frequently asked questions
How long does windshield replacement take?
The installation usually takes a couple of hours, plus the adhesive's safe drive-away time. Camera calibration can add some time.
Can a windshield chip be repaired instead of replaced?
Often, yes, if it's small, not in the driver's line of sight and not at the edge of the glass. Repair it quickly before heat or vibration spreads it.
Do I need calibration after a new windshield?
If your car has a camera mounted on the windshield for lane keeping or emergency braking, the manufacturer usually requires calibration after replacement.
Does insurance cover windshield replacement in California?
Debris damage is usually covered under comprehensive coverage, subject to your deductible. Collision damage to glass is part of the collision claim.
Does Fremont Elite Autoworks replace windshields?
Yes. Our sister auto glass company has two certified glass technicians, and we do the camera calibration in house.
