The Fremont After-Accident Checklist
Keep it on your phone. It covers the scene, the tow, your insurance claim and the DMV, in the order you'll need it.
At the scene
- Check for injuries. Call 911 if anyone is hurt.
- Move out of traffic if it's safe. Turn on your hazards.
- Call police for injuries, hit-and-run, suspected DUI, or a driver who won't share information.
- Exchange names, phones, license numbers, insurance and policy numbers, and plates.
- Photograph both cars, the scene, damage close-ups, plates and insurance cards.
- Get witness names and numbers.
Before the tow

- Take out valuables, your garage opener and toll transponder.
The same day
- Open your insurance claim and write down the claim number.
- Ask what your policy covers for towing, storage and a rental car.
- Tell your adjuster you've chosen your own body shop. California law lets you.
Within 10 days
- File the DMV SR-1 if anyone was injured or property damage is over $1,000.
- Send any police report number to your insurer and your shop.
- Approve the itemized estimate before work begins.
