Transmission in Concord, CA

Your transmission works hard every time you drive.

Close-up of transmission gears and clutch packs

Automatic transmissions use fluid to lubricate gears, cool internal parts, and transmit hydraulic pressure that engages clutches and bands. Many are controlled by their own computer. Manual transmissions use gear oil and a clutch you operate with your foot. Continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) use a belt or chain between variable pulleys and need their specific fluid.

Over time transmission fluid breaks down and collects wear material, which is why manufacturers specify fluid service intervals for many vehicles.

Signs of transmission trouble

  • Slipping, where engine speed rises but the car does not accelerate
  • Harsh, delayed or erratic shifts
  • Red or brown fluid leaking under the car
  • A burning smell or dark, burnt-smelling fluid
  • A transmission warning light or limp mode

How we approach transmission problems

We check fluid level and condition, scan the transmission control module for codes, and road-test to observe shift quality. Some problems that feel mechanical turn out to be software, sensor or wiring faults, or simply low fluid from a leak.

Depending on what we find, the fix may be a fluid and filter service, a leak repair, a solenoid or sensor replacement, or a referral for a rebuilt or replacement transmission. We explain the options and costs before anything is done.

Driving in Concord and Contra Costa County

Towing, hills and heavy stop-and-go traffic are all severe service for transmissions. Trucks and SUVs used for weekend trips from Contra Costa over the grades toward the Sierra benefit from more frequent fluid checks.

Questions about transmission

Should I flush my transmission fluid?

Follow the manufacturer's recommendation for your vehicle. Some call for periodic fluid changes; others are labeled lifetime fill but still benefit from service under severe use. We will advise based on your transmission.

Can a transmission problem be electrical?

Yes. Many modern transmissions are computer-controlled, and a faulty sensor, solenoid or connector can cause shifting problems.
