Driveline & Differential in Concord, CA

Between your transmission and your wheels sit the parts that deliver power where it needs to go.

Cutaway view of powertrain gears and shafts

Your powertrain includes the engine, transmission or transaxle, and on many vehicles a driveshaft, differential and, for four-wheel and all-wheel drive, a transfer case. On a hybrid, electric motors and a high-voltage battery pack may also be part of the system.

This page focuses on the driveline components beyond the transmission: differentials, transfer cases, driveshafts, U-joints and the fluids that protect them. Mike Babcock built his first 4x4 truck from the ground up at 15, so this is work close to the shop's roots.

Signs of a driveline problem

  • Whining or howling that changes with speed, often from a differential
  • Clunking when shifting into drive or reverse
  • Vibration that increases with road speed
  • Binding or skipping in tight turns on 4WD or AWD vehicles
  • Gear oil leaking from the differential or transfer case

What we service

We inspect and service differential and transfer case fluid, replace worn U-joints and center support bearings, check driveshaft balance, and repair leaking pinion and axle seals. On four-wheel drive and AWD vehicles, we verify the system engages and disengages correctly.

Correct fluid matters here: some differentials require friction modifiers, and many AWD systems specify a particular fluid. Using the wrong one can cause chatter or damage.

Driving in Concord and Contra Costa County

Trucks and SUVs that tow boats and trailers from Contra Costa to the Delta or head up to the mountains in winter put their differentials and transfer cases through the most work. Regular fluid service keeps those gears quiet.

Questions about driveline & differential

How often should differential fluid be changed?

Check your maintenance schedule. Intervals are often shorter for vehicles that tow or drive in severe conditions.

What causes a vibration that gets worse with speed?

Tire balance is the most common cause, but worn U-joints, a driveshaft out of balance or a failing center bearing can cause it too. We check them in order.
