TPMS in Concord, CA

A solid TPMS light means a tire is low.

Technician checking tire pressure with a gauge on an alloy wheel

A tire pressure monitoring system watches the air pressure inside your tires and warns you when one drops significantly below the recommended level. Direct systems use a battery-powered sensor inside each wheel that transmits pressure readings to the car. Indirect systems use the ABS wheel speed sensors to detect a tire that is turning faster because it is underinflated.

TPMS has been required on new passenger vehicles in the US since the 2008 model year, so most cars on the road today have it.

Common TPMS issues

  • The warning light is on steady: at least one tire is low
  • The light flashes for about a minute then stays on: a system fault
  • The warning returns right after the tires are filled
  • Readings stopped showing after new tires or wheels were installed
  • A sensor battery at the end of its life

How we service TPMS

First we check and set every tire to the pressure on your door-jamb label, including the spare if it is monitored. If the light stays on, we use a TPMS tool to read each sensor's ID, battery status and signal.

Failed sensors are replaced and programmed to your vehicle, and valve stem service kits are installed to keep them sealed. After any tire rotation or sensor replacement we complete the relearn procedure your vehicle requires.

Driving in Concord and Contra Costa County

The temperature swing between a hot Concord afternoon and a cold winter morning is enough to change tire pressure by several PSI, which is why so many drivers first see the TPMS light on the first chilly day of the season.

Questions about tpms

Why does my tire pressure light come on when it gets cold?

Air pressure drops as temperature drops. A tire that was borderline on a warm day can fall below the warning threshold on a cold morning.

How long do TPMS sensors last?

The internal batteries are sealed and are not replaceable, so sensors eventually need replacement. Many last years, but it varies by manufacturer.
