Your climate control system combines air conditioning, heating and ventilation. The A/C compressor pressurizes refrigerant, the condenser releases heat outside the car, and the evaporator absorbs heat from cabin air. Heat comes from engine coolant flowing through the heater core. Blend doors, actuators and the control panel mix and direct the air.
Air conditioning service is on Anywhere Automotive's core service menu, and it is one of the areas Mike Babcock mastered as a technician at Goodyear.
Climate control problems we fix
- A/C blows warm or only cool, not cold
- Air comes out of the wrong vents or will not change temperature
- Weak airflow even on high fan speed
- A musty smell when the A/C first comes on
- Heater blows cold or the windshield will not defog
How we diagnose A/C and heat
For A/C, we check system pressures, look for refrigerant leaks with dye or an electronic detector, and test the compressor clutch, pressure switches and cooling fans. Refrigerant only leaves a sealed system through a leak, so we find and repair the leak rather than simply recharging.
For heating and airflow, we check coolant level and flow to the heater core, the blower motor and resistor, blend door actuators, and the cabin air filter, which is often the simple fix for weak airflow.
Driving in Concord and Contra Costa County
Concord and the inland valleys of Contra Costa County regularly see summer heat well into the 90s. That is when a weak A/C system shows its problems, so a check in spring beats waiting until the first hot week.
Questions about a/c & heating
Why does my A/C keep losing its charge?
Because there is a leak. A/C systems are sealed, so repeated recharges mean refrigerant is escaping somewhere. We find and fix the source.
Why does my car's A/C smell musty?
Moisture on the evaporator can grow mildew. A new cabin air filter and an evaporator cleaning usually help.
