Inside the engine, the timing belt or timing chain connects the crankshaft to the camshafts so the intake and exhaust valves open and close at exactly the right moment relative to the pistons. It is what lets the right amount of air and fuel into each cylinder.
On many engines, called interference engines, the valves and pistons share the same space at different times. If the timing belt breaks, they can collide, bending valves and damaging pistons. That is why manufacturers set a specific replacement interval.
What to know about timing belts
- Most timing belts give little warning before failing, so the interval matters most
- Ticking or slapping from the front of the engine can indicate a worn tensioner or chain
- Oil leaks near the timing cover can contaminate and weaken a belt
- A no-start after a snap or rattle may mean the belt has broken
- Timing chains can stretch, often setting camshaft correlation codes
How we handle timing belt service
We look up your engine's replacement interval and tell you whether it uses a belt or a chain. On belt engines, we typically recommend replacing the tensioner and idler pulleys at the same time, and often the water pump when it is driven by the timing belt, because the labor overlaps.
After installation, we verify timing marks, rotate the engine by hand before starting it, and confirm there are no timing-related codes.
Driving in Concord and Contra Costa County
If you bought a used car and are not sure whether the timing belt has been done, check the service records or ask us to look. With many interference engines common on Bay Area roads, it is a job worth confirming.
Questions about timing belt
When should I replace my timing belt?
Your owner's manual or maintenance schedule lists the interval by mileage and age. We can look it up for your exact engine.
Do timing chains need replacing?
Chains are designed to last longer, but they can stretch, especially with overdue oil changes. Noise or timing codes are signs to have one checked.
