Hard Starting in Concord, CA

Slow cranking, clicking, or an engine that turns over but will not fire each point to a different system.

A car needs three things to start: enough electrical power to crank the engine, fuel delivered at the right pressure, and spark at the right time. Hard starting happens when one of those is weak. The good news is that each problem leaves clues, and the way your car behaves when you turn the key narrows it down quickly.

If your car will not start at all, call our 24-hour line. We can talk you through what you are hearing and help you plan the next step.

What your car is telling you

  • Clicking with no crank usually points to a weak battery, poor connection or starter
  • Slow, labored cranking often means a tired battery or charging problem
  • Normal cranking but no start suggests fuel delivery, ignition or a sensor
  • Starts, then stalls right away can indicate an idle, air or security system issue
  • Hard starting only when hot or only when cold narrows the list further

How we diagnose it

We load-test the battery and check the cables and grounds, measure starter draw, and confirm the charging system is keeping up. If the engine cranks normally, we check fuel pressure, spark, and the crankshaft and camshaft position sensors the computer needs to time ignition and injection.

Because regular maintenance prevents many starting problems, we will also point out anything worn that could cause the same trouble again, like an old air filter, fouled spark plugs or corroded battery terminals.

Driving in Concord and Contra Costa County

Contra Costa summers can shorten battery life, and a battery weakened by heat often fails on the first cool morning of fall. If your car has been slow to crank, have it tested before it leaves you stranded.

Questions about hard starting

My car clicks but won't start. Is it the battery?

Often, but not always. A loose or corroded cable or a failing starter can cause the same click. A quick test tells us which.

Can a bad air filter cause hard starting?

An incorrectly installed or badly clogged air filter can affect how the engine runs. One of our customers avoided a costly fuel pump replacement when that turned out to be the cause.
